The Story

I started thinking about this project because of a simple observation: bikers and cyclists are incredibly vulnerable on the road. They share lanes with vehicles that are much larger, faster, and harder to see around. Mirrors help, but they have blind spots. Looking over your shoulder takes your eyes off the road. And at night or in bad weather, the problem gets exponentially worse. I wanted to build something that could give riders a full picture of their surroundings without asking them to take their attention away from what is ahead.

The idea evolved into a helmet-based system that uses embedded computer vision AI to provide 360-degree environmental awareness in real time. Not a dashcam that records footage for later. Not a buzzer that beeps when something is close. A genuinely intelligent system that understands the rider’s environment, identifies hazards, and communicates critical information through augmented reality overlays directly in the rider’s field of view.

The Problem

Cyclists and bikers face a fundamental awareness problem. Human vision covers roughly 120 degrees of focused attention, but threats on the road can come from any direction. A car approaching from behind, a vehicle in a blind spot, a pedestrian stepping off the curb to the side — these are all scenarios where a rider needs information they physically cannot see without turning their head.

Existing solutions are limited. Side mirrors are small and vibrate at speed. Rear-facing cameras with handlebar displays require the rider to look down. Audio alerts can be missed in traffic noise. None of these approaches provide contextual, real-time hazard information integrated into the rider’s natural line of sight.

Beyond hazard detection, navigation is another area where current solutions fall short. Glancing down at a phone mount or following audio directions both create moments of distraction. For a cyclist in urban traffic, even a second of distracted riding can be dangerous.

My Solution

I designed the Smart AI Helmet as an integrated system that combines multiple cameras, edge computing hardware, computer vision models, and an AR display into a single wearable device. The system provides real-time 360-degree hazard detection and navigation overlays without requiring the rider to look away from the road.

The helmet uses an array of cameras positioned around its surface to capture a complete view of the rider’s surroundings. These camera feeds are processed by an onboard embedded AI system that runs computer vision models in real time. The AI identifies and classifies objects in the environment — vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, road obstacles — and assesses their trajectory and proximity to determine threat level.

When a hazard is detected, the system communicates it to the rider through AR overlays projected into their field of view. A car approaching from the rear left might appear as a highlighted indicator in the rider’s peripheral vision. A pedestrian stepping into the bike lane could trigger a forward-facing alert. The information is spatial and intuitive, designed to be understood in a fraction of a second without cognitive load.

The AR system also handles navigation. Turn-by-turn directions are overlaid directly onto the road ahead, so the rider never needs to look at a separate screen. Route guidance appears naturally in context, like arrows on the pavement, rather than as abstract map instructions.

Technical Details

The core technical challenge was running real-time computer vision on edge hardware small enough to fit inside a helmet. Unlike a self-driving car that can carry a trunk full of computing equipment, a helmet system needs to be lightweight, low-power, and still fast enough to process multiple camera feeds simultaneously.

I focused on optimized neural network architectures designed for edge deployment. The models needed to detect and classify objects reliably while running at frame rates high enough for real-time hazard assessment. Latency is critical — if the system takes a full second to identify an approaching vehicle, it is already too late to warn the rider.

The camera array design required careful consideration of coverage, resolution, and power consumption. Each camera adds processing overhead, so I had to balance comprehensive coverage with the system’s ability to process all feeds in real time. The final design achieves full 360-degree coverage with overlapping fields of view for depth estimation and object tracking.

The AR display system was another significant challenge. It needed to be bright enough to be visible in daylight, transparent enough not to obstruct the rider’s natural vision, and positioned correctly to present information in the rider’s peripheral and central vision zones appropriately. Hazard alerts use the peripheral zones for spatial awareness, while navigation information uses a small central overlay area.

Power management ties everything together. Edge AI processing is computationally intensive, and batteries add weight. I designed the system’s power architecture to dynamically adjust processing based on riding conditions — higher alertness in dense urban traffic, lower power draw on quiet roads — to maximize battery life without compromising safety.

Impact

This project resulted in two patent filings. The Taiwan patent (M676830) for the “Smart AI Helmet Real-Time Environmental Perception and Description System” has been granted. The US patent for the “Helmet Based System and Method for 360-Degree Environmental Awareness for Bikers Using Embedded Computer Vision AI” is currently pending approval.

Having a granted patent as a high school student is something I am genuinely proud of, but what excites me more is the potential impact. Cyclist and biker fatalities are a real and growing problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports hundreds of cyclist deaths annually in the US alone. If this technology can prevent even a fraction of those, it will have been worth every hour I spent on it.

The project also sits at an intersection that I find particularly exciting: hardware and AI. Most of my other projects are pure software, but this one required me to think about physical constraints, manufacturing considerations, power budgets, and real-world reliability in ways that software alone never does. It stretched my engineering skills in directions I did not expect.

What I Learned

The patent process taught me a tremendous amount about intellectual property, technical writing, and how to articulate an invention clearly enough for a patent examiner to understand its novelty. Writing a patent application is very different from writing code — you have to be simultaneously precise and broad, covering your specific implementation while claiming the general approach.

On the technical side, I gained deep experience with edge computing constraints. When you are optimizing a neural network to run on a device that fits inside a helmet, every millisecond of latency and every milliwatt of power matters. I learned to think about efficiency at every level of the system, from model architecture to inference pipeline to hardware selection.

Perhaps the most important lesson was about interdisciplinary engineering. This project required knowledge of computer vision, embedded systems, AR display technology, electrical engineering, industrial design, and even ergonomics. No single discipline was enough. I had to learn enough about each field to make them work together as a coherent system.

The Smart AI Helmet reinforced my belief that the most impactful engineering happens at the intersection of disciplines. The best solutions to real-world problems rarely fit neatly into one category, and the engineers who can work across boundaries are the ones who build things that actually matter.
